The 2020 NFL season has come to an end for the Los Angeles Chargers, and with it, the rookie season of quarterback Justin Herbert. Herbert was thrust into the starting role after Tyrod Taylor suffered a punctured lung in Week 2, and the rookie responded with a tremendous performance. He finished the season with 4,336 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, setting numerous records along the way.
Herbert’s performance was one of the few bright spots in a difficult season for the Chargers. He quickly established himself as one of the best young quarterbacks in the league, and his poise and leadership were evident from the start. He was able to keep the Chargers in games that they had no business being in, and he showed a knack for making big plays when his team needed them most.
Herbert’s impressive rookie season was highlighted by a number of impressive performances. He threw for over 300 yards in seven games, and he had four games with four or more touchdown passes. He also set the NFL record for most passing yards by a rookie quarterback, and he became just the fourth rookie quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 4,000 yards.
Herbert’s season was not without its struggles, however. He had some issues with turnovers, throwing 10 interceptions, and he was sacked 32 times. He also had some issues with accuracy at times, completing just 66% of his passes. Despite these issues, Herbert showed enough promise to give Chargers fans hope for the future.
The Chargers have a lot of work to do this offseason if they want to make a playoff run in 2021. However, with Justin Herbert at the helm, they have a chance to be competitive in the AFC West. Herbert has shown that he can be a franchise quarterback, and if he can continue to develop and improve, the Chargers could be a force to be reckoned with next season.
