Christian Darrisaw, the highly touted offensive tackle from Virginia Tech, has signed a record new contract with the Minnesota Vikings, marking a significant milestone in his burgeoning NFL career. The deal, which is reportedly worth $13.34 million over four years, includes a $7.08 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Darrisaw was selected 23rd overall by the Vikings in the 2021 NFL Draft, following an impressive collegiate career at Virginia Tech. He was a three-year starter for the Hokies and earned first-team All-ACC honors in his final season. His size, strength, and athleticism made him one of the top offensive line prospects in the draft.
The 6-foot-5, 322-pound lineman is expected to make an immediate impact on the Vikings’ offensive line, which struggled at times last season. Darrisaw’s addition should provide a significant boost to a unit that allowed 39 sacks in 2020, the 10th most in the NFL.
“We are thrilled to have Christian join our team,” said Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman. “He is a talented player who will add depth and versatility to our offensive line. We believe he has a bright future in the NFL and we look forward to seeing him develop as a Viking.”
Darrisaw’s contract includes a fifth-year team option, which is standard for first-round draft picks under the current collective bargaining agreement. This gives the Vikings the opportunity to retain Darrisaw through the 2025 season if they choose to exercise the option.
The signing of Darrisaw completes the Vikings’ signings of their 2021 draft class. The team has high expectations for this group of rookies, which also includes quarterback Kellen Mond from Texas A&M and linebacker Chazz Surratt from North Carolina.
Darrisaw is expected to compete for a starting job at left tackle during training camp. His competition will likely include Rashod Hill, a six-year veteran who started eight games for the Vikings last season.
“I’m excited to get to work and help this team win,” said Darrisaw. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and ready to show what I can do on the field.”
The signing of Darrisaw is a significant investment in the Vikings’ offensive line, which is a crucial component of their run-heavy offense. With star running back Dalvin Cook leading the way, the Vikings finished fifth in the NFL in rushing yards per game last season.
With Darrisaw in the fold, the Vikings are hoping to improve on that mark and make a deep run in the playoffs. The team has not won a Super Bowl in its 60-year history, but with a talented roster and a promising young offensive lineman now under contract, the future looks bright in Minnesota.
