A bit about Selkirk
Selkirk is the oldest village in Walpole Township. Settled by the Hoover family around 1800, the village was the site of a mill and an important centre for the local farming community. At various times in its history, Selkirk has had a fishery, an apple evaporating factory and a famous hotel, the Bluewater.

During the War of 1812, a number of American sympathizers were active in the area. Some were hanged for treason at the "Bloody Assize" in Ancaster in 1814. Captain William Francis, a prominent militia leader who lived near Selkirk testified at the proceedings was later murdered in retaliation.

A Selkirk soldier, William Knisley, was decorated for heroism during the Boer War (1899-1901). After he was killed in action, a statue was erected in his memory outside the Haldimand County Courthouse, Cayuga. Now used as a cenotaph, it is the only statue of an individual in Haldimand County.
Selkirk has had a number of names during its existence. Initially it was called Williamsville, after a prominent local landowner. When the post office opened in 1831 the village was called Walpole. In 1855, the name was briefly changed to Enterprise. After postal officials advised the name was already taken, the village was renamed Selkirk, in honour of Thomas Douglas, Lord Selkirk, who once owned land in the area.
